SPUP-KIRN LIBRARIANS GO FOR BENCHMARKING

March 2019

The SPUP Librarians conducted a benchmarking activity at Miriam College Libraries on March 5, 2019. Part of annual activities of SPUP-KIRN is to conduct library visits to have an opportunity to observe outstanding practices of renowned libraries nationally and internationally.

The group visited the following libraries of Miriam College; Lower and Middle School, High School, Child Study Center and the Higher Education Unit.

As we explored, we were fascinated by the modern state of-the art facilities and resources (print and non-print) in the libraries.  Each staff toured our team in their respective sections and explained how they deliver their services.  Aside from their rich collection, the libraries also house audio visual, recording, lecture/discussion and reproduction rooms which can be made through online reservations. Students are also allowed to borrow Ipad for a certain period of time and they are permitted to use library lockers to keep their belongings.

It was indeed a great learning experience in Miriam College Libraries. Having witnessed its advanced technologies and facilities, the participants gained lots of knowledge, ideas and techniques that will definitely improve value based services and library performance.

On the same day, the group proceeded to St. Paul University, Quezon City for another benchmarking tour.

Mr. Enrique Gungon, Head Librarian assisted us in the specific areas of the library including information resources, facilities, services and personnel.

The campus has 2 libraries (University and Basic Education) that offers advanced and up-to date collection, equipment and technologies.

Part of their instructional space is a well-designed story telling corner and research area with whiteboard desks that allows them to solve mathe-matical calculations.

In the University library, it houses a Library Learning Common where they provide space for creation, exploration and collaboration and creates their own environment to improve learning. It comes with energetic and creative interior design with comfortable chairs that creates a positive mood of sharing ideas

Truly, this activity provides the participants with so much learning in their pocket. Libraries nowadays transform into a different kind of learning haven that unites physical and digital world ideally for a more advanced thinking skills.

On behalf of St. Paul University Philippines, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Miriam College and St. Paul Quezon City, the Staff and most especially to Mr. Roderick Ramos and Mr. Enrique Gungon for allowing us to explore and venture the library’s best practices that could further enhance our library services.
